Teen Vaping 101: A Must-Read from an Addictions Counselor

Aly Birmingham here again. Let me start by saying that as someone who works closely with people dealing with addictions, I've seen firsthand how vaping has really taken off among teenagers in recent years. Even here in Australia in 2024, teen vaping has become a major concern that impacts individual health as well as broader public health issues.

I get why vaping seems so attractive to teens. The marketing is on point - these devices look sleek and modern, and the flavored vape juices make it seem fun and appealing. Vaping gets promoted as this safer alternative to traditional smoking. But at the end of the day, teens aloung with everyone else are getting hooked on nicotine and all the risks that come with it.

The health impacts of vaping? As someone in the addiction therapy field, I've counseled too many teenagers struggling with nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms from vaping. And the research keeps piling up about how vaping messes with respiratory health, brain development during those crucial teen years, and overall wellbeing. It's not the harmless novelty it gets marketed as. No surprise.

When I work with teens or anyone else who is addicted to vaping, we have to look at what's driving that behaviour. A lot of times, they're using vaping to cope with stress, anxiety, social pressures - the usual teenage stuff turbocharges the process these days. Therapy provides a safe space to unpack those root issues and develop healthier coping tools to manage everything life is throwing their way.

Prevention beats intervention of course so preventing vaping addiction in the first place is ideal. School programs, community outreach, education campaigns - we need it all to arm teens with facts about vaping risks and help them make informed choices free from this ugly marketing manipulation. But addiction is tough, so having accessible, youth-friendly support services in place for intervention is crucial too.

For those teens already hooked up with the addiction train, recovery is 100% possible with the proper support system. Therapies like CBT, motivational interviewing, even family therapy sessions can help teens reclaim their power over nicotine cravings. As a therapist, you create that non-judgmental space for teens to explore their relationship with vaping, focus on their strengths, and chart their own path to dropping the habit.

Beating vaping addiction isn't easy, but I've seen so many resilient teens and adults do it. By addressing the complex contributing factors head-on and tapping into their inner motivations for change, teens can absolutely overcome this challenge.

Let's keep this conversation going and support our kids in making healthy choices. Afterall, their future is the one on the line here
